Passive Fire Protection in Textile Industries: Bangladesh Perspective

Passive Fire Protection works with the slogan of "Prevention is better than cure." It is the approach that locks the possible ways to ignite a fire — and where there is no ignition, there is no fire, and there is no need for firefighting. It is a No Fire approach and the opposite of Active Fire Protection, which works after a fire to suppress it. Passive Fire Protection is the most accepted technique that can be practiced more in our textile industries in Bangladesh because it is more reliable and cost-effective with minimum maintenance efforts.

Bangladesh's Textile Sector Deserves Better Fire Safety

Bangladesh is blessed with the Textile Industries, and now it is the time to make this sector more sustainable, safe, and worthy of its people as a work environment. Fire safety is a great challenge that we are facing — and surely, we have made good achievements in making our factories fire-safety compliant through massive Active Fire Protection system installations, such as:

 

¡      Hydrant systems

¡      Automatic sprinkler systems

¡      Gas suppression systems

¡      Portable fire extinguishers

 

However, there is still a challenge in making these traditional active fire protection systems functional during actual fire incidents. It is also found that in some factory establishments, these active systems have been installed at a huge expense solely to obtain a compliance certificate and to make them functional during audits and seasonal fire drill programs. But our fire-fighting engineering objective is to save lives, property, and business — not merely to achieve compliance.

 

What Does Passive Fire Protection Include?

Passive Fire Protection includes, but is not limited to:

 

¡      As-built mechanisms within the building structure

¡      Planned use and application of fire-hazardous materials in the building

¡      Standard design and construction of the electrical system — the single most responsible source of fire incidents

¡      Systematic handling and storage of hazardous materials, known as housekeeping

¡      Compartmentation and separation mechanisms

¡      No-smoking policies

¡      Adequate ventilation

¡      Public awareness

The above-mentioned approaches do not require much investment, yet they work independently and effectively as an immunity against fire incidents. While the initial investment may be higher, the operation and maintenance costs are significantly lower.

 

A Lifelong Commitment, Not a One-Time Fix

Passive Fire Protection is a comprehensive approach that starts from the design phase and works continuously throughout the life of the building and its structures. We — all concerned stakeholders — should move away from the traditional style of building construction and practice an integrative approach to design and implement both passive and active fire protection systems in our industries, especially in the Textile sector, to make it more globally competitive and safe.
